United Opposition Condemns Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s Remarks, Calls for Action from UDA and CoG

The United Opposition has issued a strong condemnation against Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga following what it termed as “the very definition of hate speech,” as outlined in Article 33 of the 2010 Constitution. The coalition accused Kahiga of making remarks that were inflammatory and intended to stir ethnic division in the country.

In a statement signed by spokesperson Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, the Opposition clarified that Governor Kahiga’s sentiments, made on October 21, 2025, were entirely his own and did not in any way represent the position of the United Opposition or any party under its coalition. The group emphasized that Kahiga was elected on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket and therefore urged UDA leadership to take full responsibility for his conduct.“The governor’s despicable sentiments should, in one accord, be condemned by all Kenyans starting with his UDA party leader President William Ruto, Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, and Secretary-General Hassan Omar,” read the statement.

The Opposition argued that UDA should have already issued a formal censure and public apology over the remarks.Dr. Kituyi also called on the Council of Governors (CoG) to act swiftly, saying Kahiga’s apology and resignation as CoG Vice Chair were insufficient. He said the CoG must publicly reprimand him for what the Opposition termed a “stage-managed attempt” to ignite ethnic conflict.Further, the coalition urged Kahiga to reveal the individuals or groups allegedly behind his statement, accusing them of being “nefarious paymasters” intent on sparking hostility between the Luo and Kikuyu communities. Dr. Kituyi warned that such acts could amount to treason and urged Kenyans to remain united against attempts to divide the nation along tribal lines.
