UDA Slams Gachagua’s Resignation as ‘Belated and Futile’ in Scathing Rebuttal

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has lashed out at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his formal resignation from the party, calling his move “belated and futile.” UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar delivered the sharp rebuke just hours after Gachagua’s departure letter was shared publicly on social media.

In a scathing statement, Omar described Gachagua as “the worst tribal demagogue in Kenya’s history,” accusing him of attempting to whitewash his record following his impeachment on October 18, 2024. The party dismissed the resignation as a failed effort to “rewrite the facts of [his] incompetence.”

Gachagua’s resignation letter took aim at UDA’s governance, denouncing it as “the most dangerous political moment for Kenya.” He criticized President William Ruto’s administration for allegedly misleading Kenyans about reform plans and condemned policies such as the Competency-Based Curriculum and the new university funding model as “incoherent and corrupt.”

“The party has wasted a historic opportunity for economic, social, and political progress,” Gachagua wrote.

UDA’s response labeled the former deputy as “toxic, archaic, and polarizing,” stating that his impeachment marked a liberation from “the worst of the tribal bigots to hold such high office.”

Once key allies during their 2022 election victory, Gachagua and Ruto’s relationship soured amid claims of betrayal and policy disagreements. Since his ouster, Gachagua has joined forces with opposition figures Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Eugene Wamalwa in a growing resistance movement opposing Ruto’s administration.

The dramatic exchange signals deepening divisions within Kenya’s political landscape, with both camps preparing for what could be a turbulent lead-up to the next election cycle.
