Two Killed, Three Injured in Kisii-Sotik Highway Crash

Two people lost their lives and three others sustained injuries in a tragic head-on collision between a Subaru and a trailer at Bobaracho, along the Kisii-Sotik highway, on the evening of Monday, April 7.

According to Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui, the Subaru veered off its lane and collided with the trailer, which was en route from Kisii to Keroka. “The driver of the Subaru failed to keep to his lane and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer,” Kirui confirmed.

The two fatalities were occupants of the Subaru, and they succumbed to their injuries at Ram Hospital and Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. A third occupant of the Subaru is currently receiving treatment, while the trailer driver also sustained injuries and is hospitalized.

This accident follows a series of deadly crashes reported over the weekend. On Saturday, April 5, a horrific accident along the Sotik-Kericho Highway in Bomet County claimed at least 13 lives and left 11 others seriously injured. The crash involved a personal vehicle, a 14-seater matatu, and a truck.

Rescue efforts at the Sotik scene were led by Kenya Red Cross personnel and local police, who responded swiftly to remove the victims from the wreckage. Images from the scene showed extensive damage to all vehicles involved, especially the matatu.

In a separate incident on Friday, April 4, 13 people were hospitalized after a Tahmeed Coach traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi reportedly experienced brake failure, ramming into multiple vehicles on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

In light of the increasing road fatalities, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on April 3 urged all stakeholders in the transport sector to enforce stringent safety measures to curb road carnage.
