Several Feared Dead in Grisly Timau Road Crash as NTSA Cracks Down on Traffic Offenders

Meru County – Several people are feared dead and others seriously injured following a horrific road accident at Pivot area, Timau, along the Timau-Meru Road on the night of Thursday, May 1.

The crash involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu and a pickup truck. Eyewitness footage obtained by theafricanwatch.com shows the matatu severely wrecked, with its dashboard destroyed and doors torn off by the impact. Some passengers were reportedly trapped inside the mangled vehicle as local residents and police officers rushed to rescue efforts.

Authorities are yet to confirm the number of casualties, but early reports indicate multiple fatalities and injuries. The scene has been described as chaotic, with emergency teams working through the night to assist victims.

The Pivot area has long been known as a black spot for road accidents. A similar incident at the same location claimed seven lives just months ago. This latest tragedy comes only days after another deadly accident along the Siaya-Kisumu Road, where a KUPA truck transporting coffins collided with a PSV matatu, killing two people.

In response to the rising number of road accidents, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a nationwide crackdown targeting traffic offenders. NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani urged motorists to observe traffic laws, warning that enforcement officers would be arresting drunk drivers and impounding vehicles lacking speed governors.

“We urge Kenyans to remain vigilant on the roads,” said Mwashetani. “If you know your vehicle doesn’t have a speed governor or you are intoxicated, do not drive. Our officers are on high alert and will be carrying out thorough inspections.”

The crackdown aims to enhance road safety and reduce the alarming rate of accidents on Kenyan roads.
