Sakaja Faces Impeachment Threat as Political Battle Lines Harden

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is staring at possible removal from office after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) escalated an impeachment motion citing more than ten charges, largely revolving around alleged financial misappropriation.

A special sitting has been scheduled for Tuesday next week, during which MCAs will debate the motion that could determine the governor’s political fate. According to Assembly leaders, the motion has already attracted over 84 signatures, surpassing the constitutional threshold required to initiate impeachment proceedings.

At a press conference today, a section of Nairobi MCAs reaffirmed their commitment to push forward with the censure motion, framing it as a necessary step to restore accountability at City Hall. Their move signals growing pressure on the governor at a time when political tensions in the capital are mounting.

Meanwhile, allies of Sakaja have moved swiftly to mount a defense strategy. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, alongside the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, Majority Leader, and Chief Whip, convened a closed-door meeting at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation earlier today. Reports indicate that Governor Sakaja himself attended the session, which focused on mobilizing support to thwart the impeachment attempt.

The unfolding standoff sets the stage for a high-stakes political showdown in the capital, as both camps intensify efforts to sway undecided MCAs ahead of Tuesday’s decisive sitting.
