President William Ruto on Tuesday presided over the handover of 180 housing units to new homeowners at the Milimani Boma Yangu Estate Phase I in Kakamega County, marking a milestone in the government’s affordable housing agenda.
The project, implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, consists of 220 units and forms part of the administration’s broader plan to tackle Kenya’s housing deficit while improving living standards across the country.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that all Kenyans, regardless of income or location, have access to decent and dignified housing.
He noted that the affordable housing programme would continue despite criticism, highlighting its role in job creation and economic empowerment. He described the handover as a “historic moment” for the residents of Milimani, emphasizing that the initiative demonstrates the reality and impact of the government’s housing plan.
The President added that the project had already created employment opportunities for artisans, masons, electricians, surveyors, and other workers within the construction sector.Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga said the government is rolling out similar housing projects across all 47 counties, urging Kenyans to apply for units through the Boma Yangu platform or via USSD code *832#.
