Residents Protest Against MP Protus Akuja Over CDF Mismanagement Claims

Tensions flared in Loima Constituency today as hundreds of residents stormed the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) offices, protesting against their Member of Parliament, Protus Akuja.

Carrying placards and tree branches, the irate residents chanted “Akuja Must Go,” accusing the UDA legislator of corruption, nepotism, and absenteeism. The demonstrators claimed that tenders, jobs, and bursaries under the CDF program are awarded only to the MP’s family and close associates.

“We see other constituencies benefiting from CDF, but not Loima. Our children have dropped out of school due to lack of bursaries,” said one resident. Another added, “He claims there’s a road project by KeRRA, but it doesn’t exist—just another tender for his relatives.”

The protestors expressed deep frustration over the MP’s alleged absence and lack of transparency. They said several schools in the area have closed due to poor funding.

In response, MP Akuja dismissed the protests as politically motivated. “This is not a spontaneous public outcry. It is being orchestrated by my political opponents within the county government to tarnish my name,” he said. He further alleged that county officials are using the protest to deflect from their own issues, including an ongoing EACC probe.

Akuja is currently listed by Mzalendo, a parliamentary watchdog, among 19 MPs who did not make any contributions to debates in the National Assembly in 2024.

The protests come amid heightened scrutiny of NG-CDF fund usage nationwide, with growing calls to transfer its management to the national government to curb mismanagement and ensure transparency.
