Principal Secretary for Special Programmes Ismail Maalim has lauded Kenyans living abroad for their significant contribution to the nation’s economy, saying their remittances now surpass the country’s traditional cash crops as a source of foreign exchange.
Speaking during a meeting with Kenyans in Washington State, Maalim praised the diaspora community for supporting families, funding enterprises, and stabilizing Kenya’s economy through consistent remittances. He noted that their involvement has evolved from personal support to wider community transformation.
“The dedication of our people abroad is lifting families, building enterprises, and stabilizing our balance of payments,” Maalim said. “The impact is visible in the projects you support and the skills you bring back.”

He pointed out that the establishment of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving service delivery, streamlining documentation, and facilitating investments. The PS also urged Kenyans abroad to take advantage of regulated savings options, verified housing projects, SME ventures, and diaspora bonds.
Maalim encouraged continued investment in youth and the creative economy, saying Kenyan talent is gaining global recognition. “Keep backing young innovators, artists, and digital creators. Your capital, ideas, and networks open doors and build Kenya’s brand abroad,” he said.
He commended community associations in Washington and across North America for fostering unity and mobilizing resources for schools, hospitals, and small businesses. “From professional circles to community halls, you are flying the flag and opening pathways for others to follow,” he added.
Community leaders welcomed the government’s support and pledged to strengthen collaborations in skills development and structured investments. Maalim closed the session by affirming the government’s pride and partnership with Kenyans abroad, saying, “Our region is well represented, our country is well represented, and together we are moving Kenya forward.”
