President Ruto’s Strategic Tour: Winning Nationwide Support

President William Ruto is embarking on a strategic tour of Kisii and Vihiga counties, as part of an effort to garner support nationwide in the aftermath of the Azimio la Umoja protests. These protests have gained substantial backing in the region, with residents even rejecting monetary incentives to disperse from the streets during the demonstrations. Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party is seeking to penetrate the Gusii region, a historically influential area for ODM leader Raila Odinga.

To achieve this, President Ruto has brought on board leaders from various political backgrounds, including former ODM officials like Kisii Governor James Ongwae and former Woman Rep Janet Ongera. Some Azimio-allied MPs have expressed willingness to collaborate with the government for the betterment of their constituents.

In Kisii, Ruto will commission and launch several development projects in National Assembly Majority Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro’s South Mugirango Constituency. Additionally, the party aims to mobilize its members and persuade people in the region to join UDA, emphasizing that they will be part of the government’s initiatives.

Moving to Vihiga county, Ruto is set to launch the Sh1.7 billion Vihiga Water Cluster Project, funded by donors and the government. The project is expected to benefit over 300,000 families by providing access to clean and safe water throughout the county.

Lawmakers from Vihiga, led by Amani National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Omboko Milemba, have expressed enthusiasm for the president’s visit, focusing on the developmental opportunities it may bring to improve the lives of the people.

Overall, Ruto’s tour is seen as a critical move to strengthen his political standing and secure support in regions that have been traditionally aligned with other parties, particularly Odinga’s ODM. The president’s inclusive approach, incorporating leaders from various backgrounds, aims to sway the Gusii region’s swing vote and create a broader base of support for UDA’s government agenda and development initiatives.
