President Ruto Commissions Konza Technopolis as Kenya’s First Smart City and Innovation Hub

President William Ruto has officially commissioned Konza Technopolis, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s journey toward becoming a regional technology and innovation powerhouse. The launch signifies the government’s commitment to building a sustainable, knowledge-based city that integrates modern living, innovation, and environmental consciousness.

Konza City has been designed as a smart, walkable metropolis where residents will live, work, and study within twenty minutes of essential amenities. The development features underground waste management systems, a wastewater reclamation facility capable of recycling up to 70 percent of city water, and solar-powered energy networks to promote sustainability. In addition, the city will boast green open spaces, schools, and social amenities, ensuring that urban life is both dignified and enjoyable.

According to Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, the Kenya Kwanza Administration has made significant progress under the affordable housing pillar by constructing over 3,000 housing units within Konza Phase I and II. These homes form part of a broader plan to deliver 10,000 units in the short term, with the aim of providing quality housing while stimulating economic activity in the region.

The CS emphasized that Konza Technopolis is more than just a real estate project—it is the foundation of a knowledge-driven community. Families will live next to world-class universities, students will learn in a clean and technology-enabled environment, and innovators will operate close to advanced data infrastructure and green industries. Together, these elements are expected to make Konza a model smart city and a key driver of Kenya’s digital transformation and sustainable urban growth.
