The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of a police officer following a shocking attack near State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road, Nairobi, on Monday morning. The incident, which occurred at about 8:10 a.m., involved a 56-year-old man armed with a bow and arrows who confronted officers stationed in the area.
According to a statement from NPS, the suspect ignored orders to surrender and instead shot Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka in the left ribs with an arrow. Officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) quickly intervened, subdued the assailant, and arrested him at the scene. The motive behind the attack is yet to be established, and investigations are ongoing.
Constable Mattanka was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for emergency treatment but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing medical care. His body has since been transferred to the hospital’s mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the full extent of the injuries.
In the statement, the National Police Service condemned the attack, terming it a heinous act, and commended officers at the scene for their swift response, which helped prevent further harm. The Service also extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer, noting that he “paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.”
“The officer’s next of kin have been notified, and the Service stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” the statement read.
