According to Inspector General Japhet Koome, one police officer died on Thursday amid the Raila Odinga-led anti-government demonstrations.
In a statement, Koome denounced the violent acts and insisted that inquiries into them had already been started.
“As a result of the demonstrations yesterday, one police officer in Kisumu passed away from wounds received while on duty, while 20 other policemen suffered significant injuries defending themselves against the aggressive protesters.” said Koome.
Hooligans disguising themselves as protestors invaded private property, he claimed, destroying goods whose worth has not yet been assessed. Koome reassured the populace that the police would take all reasonable precautions to keep them safe.
