Peninah Malonza, a nominee for cabinet secretary for tourism and wildlife, has been saved by the National Assembly, which rejected the Parliamentary committee on appointments’ decision to reject her.
The members were asked about the committee’s unanimous decision to reject Malonza by Moses Wetangula, Speaker of the National Assembly.
By unanimous vote, the members overruled Malonza’s refusal.
A resolution to suspend the rejection of Malonza had been put forward by Kitui Women Representative Irene Kasalu. Kasalu called the Tourism CS nominee a fearless woman and a person of impeccable integrity.
“I beg to move that in accordance with the provisions of article 122 (2) of the constitution and sections 3 and 8 of the Public Appointments Act of 2011, that this House approves the appointment of Peninah Malonza as the CS for Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage. In view of the house decision today and the approval of the appointment of Peinah Malonza as the CS for Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage and the requirement for an unequivocal decision of the National Assembly on such matters, ” she stated.
Mugirango Mp. South On Tuesday, Silvanus Osoro defended Malonza, suggesting that neighborhood politics might have contributed to her rejection.
“I urge my fellow leaders to learn to put the interests of our nation above anything else. In my mind, Peninah Malonza’s refusal must have been justified by the role that local politics must have had in the entire situation. Honorable Speaker, it is incorrect to reject her based solely on one factor, Osoro remarked.
The majority’s leader, Kimani Ichung’wa, said that Malonza had not proven that she was qualified for the position while delivering the report on their screening.
