Pangani Station Leads In Police Homicide Cases In 2022

The majority of police killings nationwide continue to occur at Pangani Police Station.

In a study released on Friday by Lost Voices, 11 cases for the year 2022 were linked to the station. The Accountability Report, which provides information on statistics and trends of extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances in Kenya for the year 2022, was released in Yala.

The 11 instances reported at Pangani station, however, were a considerable decrease from the 32 cases registered at the station in 2021, according to the report.

The report goes on to say that “this may be explained by the transfer of 19 police personnel from Pangani Police Station on November 25, 2021, as a result of persistent initiatives by the Missing Voices coalition and other allies.”

After Kahawa West and Nakuru West SubCounty police with four cases each, Kayole Police Station comes in second with five cases.

The report was released by Missing Voice in collaboration with organizations such as Code of Africa, Defenders Coalition, and Amnesty International. It was also disclosed that 152 incidences of police executions and forced disappearances occurred in 2022.

Despite the staggering amount, there were 31.5 percent fewer police deaths and forced disappearances in 2018 than there were in 2021, when Missing Voices tracked 219 incidents. The number of police killings and disappearances both decreased by 30.1% and 38%, respectively.

The report states, “This is a great trend, and we look forward to a Kenya without police brutality.”

The data also revealed that with 28 cases from 11 events, January had the most police killings.
