Opposition Demands Cancellation of Kenya’s G-to-G Oil Deal, Calls for Resignation of Two Cabinet Secretaries

Opposition leaders have intensified pressure on the Kenya Kwanza administration, demanding the immediate cancellation of the controversial government-to-government fuel importation deal between Kenya and three global oil companies.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, the leaders accused the government of presiding over what they described as a deepening fuel scandal that has pushed the cost of living higher for ordinary Kenyans. The opposition wants the G-to-G agreement involving Saudi Aramco, ADNOC, and ENOC terminated, arguing that the framework has failed to protect consumers from rising pump prices.

They also called for the resignation of Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui, claiming the two ministers must take responsibility for the ongoing crisis in the energy sector.According to the leaders, Kenyans have been left to bear the burden of soaring fuel costs alone, as the entire energy value chain has allegedly been turned into what they termed a criminal enterprise.

The opposition further alleged that recent changes in the pricing structure under the fuel import arrangement have sharply increased the price of petrol and diesel, triggering higher transport fares and increased production costs across the country.

They accused senior government officials of allowing private and political interests to influence the petroleum supply chain, saying the system no longer serves the public interest. In addition, the leaders demanded that proceeds from the planned sale of government shares in Safaricom PLC and the Kenya Pipeline Company be redirected to cushion Kenyans from the effects of the latest fuel price hikes.

They argued that the funds should be used to stabilize fuel prices and protect households from the rising cost of transport, food, and essential commodities. The statement comes amid growing public concern following the latest review of fuel prices, which saw petrol and diesel prices rise significantly across the country.
