The Orange Democratic Movement held its 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa on November 14-15, attracting thousands to venues like ASK Grounds, where the party reflected on its protest origins and navigated its alliance with President William Ruto’s government.
The National Governing Council ratified Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as the new leader following Raila Odinga’s death, appointed deputies including Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and heard speeches from Siaya Governor James Orengo criticizing overtures to Ruto and calling for a 2027 presidential run.
Several speakers stirred tensions as they called for continuous resolve and conviction to fight for justice and accountability by party officials, and drummed up support for the values upheld by the late leader.

They further indicated that they are ready to go back to the streets should the cost of living go high and the insecurity persist within the country
In her remarks, Winnie Odinga urged a review of the coalition pact, questioning the capabilities of those who have been tasked with managing the relationship with President William Ruto under the broad-based government. She indicated that ODM will need to go back to the people to select individuals who will manage the broad-based politics, noting that it is a complicated affair.
The events concluded with the ODM founder’s dinner, which Ruto attended, reminiscing about ODM’s founding and underscoring the party’s internal divide between unity and opposition.
