NPS Enhances Security as Matatu Strike Protests Continue

The National Police Service (NPS) says security measures have been heightened as protests linked to the ongoing matatu strike begin on Monday, 18 May, 2026 in various parts of the country.

In a press statement from the Office of the Inspector General, the police say they are monitoring reports of the strike, which they describe as being organised by a minority of matatu operators and a section of public service transport actors. Despite the disruptions, the NPS says the majority of stakeholders in the transport sector are continuing with normal operations.

“The majority of stakeholders in the transport sector remain committed to conducting their business without interruption,” the statement says.

Police also note that the United Transport Association of Kenya (UTAK) has distanced itself from the strike through a separate statement. The NPS has, however, assured Kenyans of their safety and urging members of the public to remain calm as they continue with their daily activities.

“The NPS wishes to assure Kenyans of their security as they go about their duties. Security measures have been enhanced, and any disruptive conduct will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

Kenyans are also being urged to cooperate with law enforcement officers during the ongoing protests and report any incidents through the toll-free emergency numbers 999 and 911.
