Nairobi Expressway Reopens After Protests and Vandalism

The Moja Expressway Company announced on Sunday, July 16, that the Nairobi Expressway has resumed operations at the Mlolongo, Syokimau, and SGR toll stations. The highway had been closed following vandalism during protests the previous week. The company released a statement on its Twitter page, urging motorists to be cautious of ongoing restoration work at certain locations and to adhere to the speed limit of 80km/h for their safety.

The closure occurred after protests against the government escalated into violence, resulting in the looting and vandalism of the road on Wednesday. Numerous gantries were damaged during the chaos, and the Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, estimated that the repairs would cost approximately Sh700 million. However, the Moja Expressway Company assured the public that restoration work was underway and that the highway was now deemed safe for use.

The company expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the highway’s closure. It emphasized that it was committed to serving motorists and ensuring their safety. With the resumption of operations, the Nairobi Expressway is once again available for commuters, but drivers are reminded to exercise caution and be mindful of the ongoing repair efforts at specific locations along the route.
