Mombasa Police Nab Woman Behind “Dream Date” Robbery Targeting British Tourist

Detectives in Nyali, Mombasa, have arrested a woman accused of masterminding an elaborate fake romance scheme that ended in a violent robbery targeting her British boyfriend.

The suspect, identified as Samira Mumbi Kiarie, popularly known as Samira, allegedly spent months cultivating an online relationship with the victim, convincing him to travel to Mombasa for what she described as a “dream date.”

According to investigators, the British national arrived at Samira’s luxury apartment in Nyali expecting a romantic evening, unaware that he was walking into a meticulously staged trap. Moments after he entered the house, two men stormed in — one posing as Samira’s enraged husband, and the other flashing a fake police identification badge.

The so-called “husband” accused the visitor of destroying his marriage, while the impostor officer threatened to arrest him for an alleged affair. Fearing for his life and reputation, the victim was coerced into transferring KSh800,000 to mobile money numbers provided by the gang. After the money was received, the group calmly escorted the shaken man out before disappearing into the night.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched a forensic probe that traced digital footprints to the suspects. Samira was arrested alongside Paul Webster Mangeni, alias Paulo, who is believed to be one of her key accomplices.

Authorities have since established that the two are part of a wider syndicate targeting unsuspecting foreigners through dating platforms. The group reportedly books high-end apartments or Airbnbs to execute their scams and swiftly vanishes once payments are made.

Both suspects are currently in custody as police intensify the manhunt for the third accomplice, who remains at large. The DCI has cautioned the public — especially online daters — to exercise vigilance and verify identities before engaging in in-person meetings.
