The Maji’s Resort
Maji’s Resort sits on the southern tip of Lamu Island at Shela Beach, 15 minutes by dhow from Lamu Town. It’s built like a Swahili palace with coral stone walls, carved doors, and rooms that open straight onto white sand. No TVs, no rush. Days run on tide time: morning swim, seafood lunch under makuti, afternoon nap in a swing bed. The resort runs on solar power and rainwater, and the team is mostly local Shela fishermen turned guides. December to March gives you flat, calm water perfect for dhow trips to Manda Island. July to September brings kitesurfing winds and cooler nights. You’ll fly into Manda Airport, then take a 10-minute boat to the dock. Book the beachfront suites early – there are only 8. You’ll leave with sand in your pockets and your phone battery untouched.
Manda Bay Lodge
Manda Bay Lodge is on Manda Island, 20 minutes by boat from Lamu Town, facing the Indian Ocean with nothing but mangroves and sky behind it. Think 13 canvas and thatch bandas on stilts, outdoor showers, and meals served family-style under acacia trees. It’s the stay for travelers who want “castaway” without giving up cold drinks and hot showers. Activities are tide-led: snorkel at Kizingoni, paddleboard through mangroves, or join fishermen for hand-line fishing at sunset. Power is solar, WiFi is slow on purpose. Best months are November to February for calm seas, and June to October for birding when European migrants arrive. Fly to Manda Airport, lodge pickup handles the rest. Rates include full board because there’s nowhere else to eat. A day here feels like you stepped off the grid and remembered how to listen.
Peponi Hotel Lamu
Peponi Hotel has been Lamu’s address since 1966, right on Shela Beach where dhows still sail past. It’s Italian-Swahili: terracotta floors, whitewashed walls, and bougainvillea everywhere. 28 rooms, no two the same, most with sea views and breeze from louvered windows. The restaurant is famous for wood-fired pizza and fresh catch, eaten with your feet in the sand. Peponi hosts writers, artists, and families who return yearly. Activities stay local: dhow to Lamu Town market, yoga at sunrise, or kite lessons when the kaskazi wind blows. Peak season is December-January and August – Italians fly in direct. Shoulder months April-May and October give you lower rates and empty beach. Manda Airport + 15-minute boat transfer. Choose Peponi if you want Lamu with history, good coffee, and neighbors who know the dhow captains by name.
The Cabanas
The Cabanas is Shela’s no-frills option, 5 minutes walk from Peponi and 20 minutes by boat from Lamu Town. Eight thatched cabanas, each with veranda, fan, and cold-water shower. It’s solar powered and community-run, employing women from Shela village for crafts and cooking. You get bed + breakfast, then eat Swahili dishes at nearby local spots or cook in the shared kitchen. The beach is quiet, the reef is 100m out for snorkeling at high tide, and dhows pass close enough to wave. April-May rains make the island green and cheap, while September-October is kite season. Manda Airport transfer is arranged by the owners. This is Lamu for backpackers, long-stay creatives, and anyone who’d rather spend money on a dhow trip than room service. You trade polish for authenticity, and the stars make up the difference at night.
Pick Your Island Pace
Maji’s Resort Lamu gives barefoot luxury and Shela Beach suites with solar power 15 minutes by dhow from town. Manda Bay Lodge offers Robinson Crusoe bandas on Manda Island with mangrove paddling and full board. Peponi Hotel delivers iconic Italian-Swahili rooms and wood-fired pizza on Shela sand since 1966. The Cabanas provides simple solar cabanas 5 minutes from Peponi for backpackers and long stays. Choose Maji’s for romance, Manda Bay for castaway comfort, Peponi for Lamu history, and The Cabanas for authentic budget island life. Leave knowing Lamu reset your clock to tide time.
