KRA Moves Tax Filing to WhatsApp in Push to Simplify Compliance

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a WhatsApp-based tax filing platform as part of efforts to simplify the process and make compliance easier for taxpayers. The new system reduces the number of steps required to file returns from eight to three, aiming to improve user experience and reduce the complexity often associated with tax filing.

The platform is designed to support the filing of annual returns while also offering real-time assistance to users who may face challenges during the process. This approach is part of a broader digitisation effort, with the initial rollout targeting individuals earning employment income.

A key feature of the system is the use of pre-filled returns. These returns capture employer PAYE data, including gross pay, taxable income, and statutory deductions such as the Social Health Insurance Fund and the Affordable Housing Levy. This reduces the need for manual data entry and helps streamline the filing process.

Employers are also set to benefit from a simplified PAYE return system, while taxpayers with additional income streams will be able to access pre-filled annual returns covering basic details and withholding taxes. In addition, KRA has introduced an upgraded taxpayer dashboard to improve visibility over transactions, including invoices, imports, and exports, as well as provide more flexibility in claiming allowable business expenses.

The shift to WhatsApp reflects a move to align tax services with platforms that taxpayers already use daily. By combining fewer steps, pre-filled data, and instant support, KRA is working to reduce barriers that often make compliance difficult, while making the tax system more accessible and easier to navigate.
