KRA, KICD Partner To Enhance Tax Literacy Through Technology In CBC

Kenya Revenue Authority has embraced technology to mainstream and disseminate tax literacy to learners in the country. In partnership with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), the Authority will now develop exclusive tax e-resources for students in Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

This collaboration marks a significant step in simplifying tax concepts and integrating tax education into mainstream learning.

Under the partnership, KRA will develop specialized digital resources focusing on key subjects such as Business Studies, Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and Social Studies. These resources are designed to equip students with a foundational understanding of taxation, its purpose, and its impact on individuals and society.

Speaking during an engagement with KICD leadership, KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga emphasized the importance of introducing tax education at an early age. He said that tax has a significant direct impact on individuals and society and therefore young people should be facilitated to comprehend tax matters from an early age.

Wattanga emphasized that integrating tax education content into curricula simplifies complex tax issues, which is pivotal for transforming the tax-paying culture in Kenya. He expressed optimism that this initiative will foster a sense of responsibility towards the tax system, ultimately leading to higher compliance rates.

“By learning about taxes at an early age, students become more informed and responsible citizens,” Wattanga added, “contributing to a long-term shift towards a society that values a fair and efficient tax system.” Senior Deputy Director, TVET Dr. Samuel Obudho underscored the significant impact of the collaboration between KICD and KRA. “This partnership provides an efficient platform for KRA to reach a wide audience,” said Dr. Obudho.

He highlighted that KICD will work closely with KRA to develop up-to-date tax literacy digital content with simulation environments, aiming to positively influence learners’ perceptions and attitudes towards taxes.

KRA and KICD partnership will begin with primary and secondary school students and will progress to tertiary education, targeting potential taxpayers. Recognizing the importance of public outreach, the initiative aims to engage the general public, as their role in tax matters is significant.

The e-content developed through this partnership will target learners in Junior and Senior Schools, Upper Primary Education, Primary Teacher trainees, secondary teacher Education trainees, teacher trainees of early years Education, learners in early years education, and the general public.

This collaborative effort between KRA and KICD represents a commitment to enhancing tax literacy and fostering a culture of understanding and compliance with tax obligations. Through accessible and innovative digital resources, the aim is to empower students and the broader public with the knowledge and skills to navigate the tax landscape effectively.
