Kiambu Ex-Governor Ferdinand Waititu Handed 12-Years Jail Term

A Nairobi court has found Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu guilty of corruption sentencing him to 12 years in prison or a fine of Ksh 53.5 million. Waititu has, therefore, been handed a five-year jail term or a fine of Ksh 2.5 million.

The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki ruled that Waititu’s actions were a breach of public trust, imposing a mandatory fine of Ksh 51 million, failure to pay leading to an additional seven years in prison.

His conviction stems from irregular tender awards in Kiambu County in February 2018, also not exempting Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangare, who has been fined Ksh 500,000/one year in prison.

The court stated that the accused benefited from their criminal actions at the expense of public service.

The court also ruled that Luka Mwangi Wahinya, former Chief Officer for Roads in Kiambu, will serve to two years in prison or a fine of Ksh 1 million, also fined Ksh 20 million, failure to pay leading to five additional years in prison.

Testimony Enterprises Limited directors, Charles Chege Mbuthia and Beth Wangeci Mburu, received jail terms of four years and three years respectively. Mbuthia got fined Ksh 2 million with an additional mandatory fine of Ksh 294 million while Wangeci was fined Ksh 1.4 million.

The court criticised the accused for forgery of academic credentials, calling it a serious concern. Waititu, his wife, and the co-accused were barred from holding public office for ten years.

The court ordered the return of confiscated documents, including passports, cash bail, and title deeds.

However, Waititu and the co-accused have been given 14 days to appeal the ruling.
