Kenya, Netherlands Sign MoUs to Strengthen Trade and Investment Ties

NAIROBI – Kenya and the Netherlands have strengthened their bilateral ties by signing three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering trade, agriculture, and tourism. Additionally, a Letter of Intent was signed to support water infrastructure development.

President William Ruto and Dutch King Willem-Alexander announced the agreements today at State House, Nairobi, marking a significant step in their long-standing partnership.

“These agreements will translate our discussions into tangible action,” President Ruto stated.

The trade and investment MoU establishes a framework for structured dialogue, paving the way for a Joint Trade Committee to enhance business relations. The agriculture MoU aims to boost productivity, sustainability, and food security while facilitating technology exchange and market expansion. President Ruto also expressed plans to extend this agricultural cooperation to the East African region.

The third MoU seeks to increase Dutch tourist arrivals in Kenya and encourage investment in the tourism sector. Ruto noted that Kenya’s international tourist numbers rose from 2 million to 2.4 million in 2024.

In addition, the Letter of Intent focuses on water infrastructure projects, including the Naivasha Special Economic Zone Water Supply and the Sabaki Bulk Water Supply Project in Kilifi County. These projects aim to improve access to clean and reliable water.

Discussions also covered climate action, regional security, and youth empowerment, aligning with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

King Willem-Alexander praised Kenya’s progress and emphasized the importance of governance, accountability, and human rights during his historic first state visit to the country.

The visit includes engagements with Kenya’s Supreme Court and the launch of a cold chain corridor to boost agricultural exports to Rotterdam.
