Kenya Mourns Catherine Nyamato, First Gusii Woman MP

Kenya is mourning the passing of Catherine Nyamato, a trailblazing leader and the first Gusii woman to serve in Parliament. Nyamato, a former nominated MP under the KANU government between 1997 and 2002, collapsed and died on Wednesday while engaging with youth near her farm in Kijauri, Nyamira County. She was rushed to Summit Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Nyamato’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief from across the country. Known for her unwavering advocacy for women’s rights, Nyamato was a respected leader who served in various influential capacities, including National Women Leader for Narc-Kenya and Secretary General of the League of Kenyan Women Voters. The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) described her as a fearless champion against female genital mutilation (FGM) and a mentor to many.

Former IEBC Commissioner Roselyne Akombe paid an emotional tribute, calling Nyamato her “second mother.” Akombe recounted how Nyamato supported and mentored her through university, saying, “This loss is so deep. So devastating.”

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba also expressed his sorrow, remembering Nyamato as a woman of integrity, humility, and deep dedication to community development.

Despite her previous political accomplishments, Nyamato remained active in public life. She recently contested the Nyamira Woman Representative seat, though unsuccessfully. At the time of her death, she was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Leadership Management at Strathmore University.

Catherine Nyamato’s legacy as a political pioneer, advocate, and mentor remains etched in Kenya’s history. She inspired countless women to pursue leadership and helped shape the national dialogue on gender equality and human rights. Her death marks the end of an era for Gusii politics and Kenyan women’s leadership.
