Kenya Introduces Strict New Waste Management Policies

The government of Kenya, via the Ministry of Environment, has introduced strict new waste management policies which will require vehicles used for transporting wastes to meet a particular design modifications, labeling and tracking compliance.

These policies, published by Environment CS Aden Duale, now requires waste transporters to use sealed, spill-proof vehicles. Additionally, the vehicles must have clearly labelled waste types, such as-blue for organic waste, black for general waste, and green for recyclables-marking a shift from the current unregulated use of open trucks and pickups.

Companies dealing with waste management must carry waste tracking notes and present them to law enforcement upon request, with six-month suspensions for non-compliance.

Justifying the direction taken by the government, the ministry clearly states that these measures aim to curb urban pollution, mitigate flooding risks, and prevent disease outbreaks linked to poor waste disposal, including cholera, malaria, and dengue.

The policy strengthens Kenya’s waste governance framework, aligning with global sustainability efforts.
