IEBC Raises Alarm Over Disruptions in Political Campaigns

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has sounded a warning to political leaders across the country following a rise in cases of organised disruptions during campaign events.

The commission cautioned that any politician found engaging in such practices risks disqualification from participating in the 2027 General Election.According to IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, the commission has observed a growing trend where groups often composed of young people are allegedly mobilised and hired to interfere with political meetings.

These disruptions have in some cases escalated into chaos, raising concerns about the safety of participants and the integrity of the electoral process.Ethekon noted that the trend has been reported in several regions, particularly during recent by-elections.He stressed that such actions not only undermine democratic values but also violate electoral laws designed to ensure free, fair, and peaceful campaigns.

The IEBC, he added, is closely monitoring political activities and gathering evidence to hold accountable those who may be orchestrating such incidents.

The commission has urged political actors to exercise responsibility and restraint, emphasizing that campaigns should be platforms for engaging voters through ideas rather than intimidation or disorder.

It also called on the youth to resist being used as tools for political violence, encouraging them instead to participate constructively in democratic processes.Observers say the warning comes at a critical time, as early political alignments begin to form ahead of the 2027 elections.

The IEBC’s stance signals a renewed effort to enforce electoral regulations and maintain stability in the country’s political environment. As preparations for future elections continue, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding democracy by ensuring that all political activities are conducted in a peaceful and lawful manner.
