The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the National Police Service (NPS) have deployed more than 1,000 police officers to secure the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election following widespread allegations of voter bribery, political violence, and pre-meditated electoral fraud.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed the scale of the security operation, which stations a minimum of two armed officers at each of the 114 polling centers across the constituency in Nyandarua County. To mitigate the risk of potential unrest, authorities have also dispatched four platoons from the General Service Unit (GSU), four Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) platoons, and four high-capacity anti-riot water cannons.
The high-stakes mini-poll faces intense national scrutiny as voters head to the ballot box. Opposition factions have repeatedly accused the ruling administration of using state resources to induce voters and attempting to manipulate the local voter register.
Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua directly condemned the heavy security deployment, characterizing it as a voter intimidation tactic.
“The command of the National Police Service has completely gone to rogue politicians,” Gachagua stated in an official protest letter. “The thousands of police officers deployed must remain uniformed, display service numbers, and refrain from intimidating voters or delaying legitimate party agents.”
During a joint press briefing, the electoral body vehemently denied allegations of partisan bias and register manipulation. IEBC officials issued a stern warning that anyone violating the Election Offences Act(including voters attempting to photograph marked ballots)faces immediate arrest and prosecution.
Concurrently, civil society oversight bodies, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), have urged local residents to reject financial inducements and vote freely. Activists have also filed an emergency court petition seeking to halt the exercise, citing rampant state-sponsored bribery and systemic electoral malpractices throughout the brief campaign period.
