Health CS Aden Duale Unfit for Office, Says KMPDU Boss

Nairobi, March – Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah has cast doubt on Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale’s ability to handle the ministry’s challenges effectively.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, March 30, Atellah criticized Duale’s understanding of the healthcare system, arguing that he lacks the expertise required to manage the critical sector. He compared Duale unfavorably to his predecessor, Deborah Barasa, whom he praised for her comprehensive approach to healthcare administration.

“If you look back at our previous experience with a non-doctor, Susan Nakhumicha, she called for a strike because she failed to grasp the role of doctors and interns. She politicized healthcare issues instead of addressing them,” Atellah stated. “With Deborah, for the first time in union history, a strike notice did not materialize because she understood what needed to be done.”

Atellah warned Duale against politicizing the health sector and urged him to focus on implementing the Social Health Authority (SHA) effectively. He further emphasized the need to address long-standing issues such as the welfare of medical interns and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which have frequently led to strikes.

“We don’t engage in politics; we withhold our skills when necessary. No amount of politics will solve the issues pending, including interns’ welfare and the CBA,” he asserted.

Duale, however, defended his appointment, vowing to crack down on cartels sabotaging Universal Health Coverage. He assured Kenyans that he had the president’s full support in implementing SHA and warned those with personal interests to realign their priorities.

“With the president’s commitment and my dedication, universal healthcare will be achieved,” Duale affirmed.
