Gachagua Rules Out Direct Nominations in New Party

NAIROBI – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has ruled out issuing direct nominations to political aspirants under his newly launched Democracy for Citizens Party, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in party primaries.

Speaking during the official unveiling of the party in Nairobi, Gachagua stated that direct nominations have long undermined the democratic rights of grassroots supporters. He insisted that every member deserves an opportunity to participate in choosing the party’s candidates.

“We will not entertain direct nominations. Democracy begins at the grassroots, and the people must be allowed to decide who represents them,” Gachagua declared, underscoring the party’s commitment to inclusive and participatory politics.

The launch of the Democracy for Citizens Party marks a significant political shift, coming just days after Gachagua’s resignation from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. His departure follows a highly publicized fallout with President William Ruto and his impeachment from the Deputy President’s office in October 2024.

Gachagua’s political realignment has seen him forge new alliances with key opposition figures, including Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Wiper party boss Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa. The coalition of seasoned politicians signals a potential reconfiguration of Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections.

The former Deputy President’s pledge to uphold internal democracy appears aimed at winning support from disillusioned voters and grassroots leaders frustrated with opaque nomination processes in mainstream parties.

Gachagua concluded his remarks by calling on Kenyans to embrace political parties that prioritize accountability and people-centered leadership, stating that the Democracy for Citizens Party would provide a fresh alternative rooted in genuine democratic values.
