Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched scathing allegations against Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika’s husband, Sam Mburu, accusing him of unlawfully influencing police operations in the county.
Speaking during a rally in Boston, Gachagua claimed several police officers in Nakuru had privately disclosed that Mburu was issuing them direct instructions, bypassing official government channels. According to Gachagua, this influence stems from Mburu’s alleged close business ties with President William Ruto.
“The police in Nakuru are crying to me. They say Sam Mburu is giving them orders, yet he holds no official government role,” Gachagua stated.
He further alleged that Mburu boasts of being in charge of national government functions in Nakuru, while his wife handles the county. Gachagua claimed Mburu had threatened to orchestrate transfers of officers who failed to comply with his demands, asserting power based on his financial contributions to President Ruto’s campaigns.
The DCP leader also accused Mburu and Ruto of jointly importing goods such as Kenya Power meters, fertiliser, duty-free rice, and sugar—profits from which allegedly fund their partnership.
On Sunday, Gachagua’s convoy was blocked by police on the Nakuru-Nyahururu highway while en route to Subukia. Officers reportedly lobbed teargas, disrupting the planned rally. However, Gachagua revealed some officers confessed they disagreed with the orders and had feigned enforcement by throwing canisters away from the crowd.
In response, Gachagua urged Nakuru residents to reject Governor Kihika’s re-election bid, citing alleged abuse of power by her spouse.
Videos from the scene showed Senator John Methu and DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala attempting to defuse the tension and negotiate passage.
The Governor and her husband are yet to respond to the claims.
