The National Assembly has announced a 90-day suspension for East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament, Falhada Iman, following a physical altercation between her with Nominated MP Umulkheir Harun, which went viral.
As seen in the video capturer on Tuesday; still circulating online, the two are seen engaging into a physical fight outside parliamentary grounds moulding into what had now drawn public attention and controversy.
While addressing that matter, presented before the House on Wednesday afternoon, Speaker of the NA Moses Wetangula termed Iman’s actions undermining the dignity of Kenyan Parliament, injuring its image and reputation, hence not acceptable.
“After reviewing the video and the incident report, it is clear that this violent altercation casts Parliament in a negative light and has the potential to damage the dignity and integrity of this House…This behavior is unbecoming of a public official and will not be tolerated.” He said.
The speaker then issued a 90 day suspension to the lawmaker prohibiting her to access the premise, additionally ordering that the lawmaker should also submit a written letter that describes and explains the incident not later than 5:00 PM on Monday, April 14.
Wetangula further explained that, Iman, being an EALA MP does not privileges of the other MPs sitting in the Kenyan National Assembly, like the right to address the house directly emphasizing that she submits her explanation in writing.
Wetangula also stated that Iman will be barred from accessing the Parliament buildings as she continues to serve the suspension period; that if she needs to deliver her explanation in person, she must be escorted by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
