DP Gachagua Oversees Arrival of Shipment of Ukraine-Food Grant to Kenya

Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has overseen the arrival of shipment of 30,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat into the country.

The donation, which is in the Ukraine humanitarian programme, has been received at the port of Mombasa on Monday, March 20, 2023.

Since last year November, the government of Ukraine headed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has through the humanitarian programme issued over 140,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat to African Nations including Kenya.

Despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the government of Ukraine has stood firm to extend the support in helping countries heavily hit by hunger, to achieve missions of the World Food Program (WFP).

According to the Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office and Chairman of the International Coordination Group for the Prevention of Hunger, Mr Andriy Yermak, Ukraine has not forgotten their obligation towards allied nations in needy times.

He said.

While we continue to defend our nation against external aggression, we have not forgotten our humanitarian obligation towards our allies in time of need.”

The delivered wheat grain is expected to curb food insecurity in Kenya who has over 5.4 million of her population struck by hunger.

Report reveals that about 970,200 children will likely to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2023 if necessary plans to curb this is not laid down in time.

Global factors including Covid 19 pandemic, climate change, high inflation around the globe as well as current conflict between Russia and Ukraine are cited to be responsible for the great surge in the food crisis across Kenya and Africa.
