DCI Probes IPOA Over Alleged Evidence Misconduct

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially taken over a case involving alleged misconduct by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). This follows a formal complaint filed by Samson Talaam, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Nairobi Central Police Station.

The controversy centers around a mobile phone seized from Talaam during IPOA’s investigations into the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’. The phone, along with its password, was handed over to IPOA for examination. However, allegations emerged that the phone was used to send text messages requesting money while in IPOA’s custody.

This revelation has raised serious concerns about the potential tampering or misuse of critical evidence, prompting the DCI to step in and conduct an independent probe.

Legal proceedings on the matter are ongoing, with the case set to be mentioned in court on July 1, 2025. The DCI is expected to present a comprehensive report detailing their findings during the session.

The case has sparked widespread discussion, with some questioning IPOA’s credibility and the integrity of evidence handling in sensitive investigations. Stakeholders have called for transparent and thorough accountability as the investigation unfolds.

The DCI’s involvement is seen as a significant step toward uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for all parties involved.
