Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya’s convoy was attacked last night after attending the requiem mass for former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.
The governor was reportedly ambushed by hired goons shortly after arriving at the venue, leading to an altercation that left his driver and two police officers injured.
Eyewitnesses claim the rowdy mob arrived in the company of Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi Bisau, who had already left before the attack. The situation escalated rapidly, forcing police officers to intervene.
In a statement, Natembeya’s office accused Bisau of orchestrating the attack by planting youths along the roadside to ambush the governor’s entourage. “Despite police intervention, Hon. Bisau reportedly deployed youth who pelted stones at the governor’s vehicle,” the statement read.
Images circulating online show Natembeya’s driver with a bloody neck wound. The governor condemned the attack, calling it a “barbaric” attempt to instill fear.
“It is regrettable that Hon. Bisau turned a moment of mourning into a battleground for political theatrics. Such lawlessness must be met with the full force of the law,” Natembeya stated.
Security has since been heightened at Chebukati’s funeral in Kiminini, with rigorous screening to prevent further chaos.
This attack comes barely a week after Natembeya was forced to flee from former Malava MP Malulu Injendi’s home when youth chanting pro-President Ruto slogans disrupted his visit.
Despite the incidents, Natembeya assured residents that he remains committed to ensuring a safer and more secure county.
