AGRA Appoints Alice Ruhweza As Its New President

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has appointed Alice Ruhweza as its new 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, effective March 1st, 2025, succeeding Dr. Agnes Kalibata after her two transformative terms.

Ruhweza, who joins from the World Wide Fund for Nature, brings 28 years of experience working at the intersection of economic, social, and environmental policy, with a strong background in international development and leadership roles across government, private sector, United Nations, and major international NGOs.

The appointment comes at a critical time as African leaders prepare to adopt the CAADP strategy and action plan for 2026-2035, with AGRA facing urgent challenges in agricultural transformation. Established in 2006, AGRA operates in 12 countries and aims to transform agriculture from subsistence farming to a thriving business model.

Under Ruhweza’s leadership, the organization will focus on addressing challenges including economic volatility, geopolitical tensions, and climate change, while promoting investments in research, innovative technologies, and climate-smart farming practices to achieve sustainable and resilient agri-food systems across Africa.

Under Ruhweza’s leadership, AGRA is poised to leverage emerging technologies and innovative financing mechanisms to address critical challenges in African agriculture. Her extensive experience in environmental finance and policy, particularly her work with UNDP, where she facilitated access to over $1 billion in sustainable development funding for 44 African countries, positions her to enhance AGRA’s capacity in mobilizing resources for agricultural transformation.

Ruhweza’s background in systems thinking and her track record of building multi-stakeholder coalitions across government, private sector, and civil society will be crucial in navigating these challenges while advancing AGRA’s mission to create resilient and inclusive agri-food system
