Kenya Places Ksh. 500M Bid to Host Grammy Awards

President William Ruto has announced that Kenya has officially placed a bid to host the Grammy Awards, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to position itself as a global entertainment hub. Speaking at a townhall meeting at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) during celebrations for the Hustler’s second anniversary, the President confirmed that Ksh. 500 million has already been paid towards this bid.

In April, President Ruto revealed Kenya’s inclusion in a Grammy Global Ventures initiative, identifying it as one of four countries to collaborate in advancing the international creative industry. He highlighted plans to incorporate performing arts into the national education system through specialised arts training curricula.

Key initiatives, such as the Department of Creative Economy and Talanta Hela, were also noted as part of efforts to nurture and monetise local talent. Upcoming collaborations with Hollywood aim to further elevate Kenya’s film industry and open global markets to local creatives.

Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, disclosed that his office had directed the State Department to ensure payment for Kenya’s bid to host the African Grammy Awards headquarters. Itumbi added that a Grammy Awards representative would meet President Ruto later this week to advance discussions.

Additionally, Itumbi revealed that Kenya is bidding to host the World Creative Economy Conference in 2027, which would make it the first African nation to do so. This initiative is expected to unlock vast opportunities for Kenya’s creative sector.

“We are determined to grow our creative economy and establish Kenya as a hub for global entertainment events,” Itumbi stated.

President Ruto assured the audience of his administration’s commitment to these initiatives, expressing confidence in Kenya’s ability to secure its role in the global creative landscape.
