NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 29 – Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over disruptions that marred a funeral in Limuru on Thursday, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua alleged he was targeted.
In a summons issued by a police officer attached to the DCI in Limuru, Thang’wa is expected to appear today at the Nyeri DCI offices to provide information regarding the mayhem that unfolded at Bibirioni Boys High School.
“Joseph Chirchir, a police officer attached to DCI Limuru, is making inquiries into the alleged offence of malicious damage to property and injury to persons. We believe Senator Paul Karungo Thang’wa has information to assist with our investigations,” the statement read.
Thang’wa, a close ally of Gachagua, dismissed the summons as intimidation. “They refuse to meet us at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road but instead summon us to Nyeri over an incident that happened in Limuru. This intimidation will not silence us. See you in Nyeri,” he said.
The chaos erupted as mourners gathered to honor a departed individual. According to witnesses, disorder began when former Member of Parliament Peter Mwathi paused to address microphone issues. Suspected goons then dismantled the tent where Gachagua was seated, forcing him and others to flee.
Gachagua alleged that the state orchestrated the incident, pointing out the withdrawal of his security detail earlier in the week. He claimed his attackers targeted his vehicle with stones and iron bars, leaving him vulnerable.
“This is deliberate,” Gachagua said. “The withdrawal of my security was meant to expose me to such risks, but we will continue to contest the injustice we face.”
The incident has sparked political tension, with leaders calling for accountability and an impartial investigation.
