The African Union Commission’s Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has voiced deep concern over the escalating security crisis in Sudan, particularly the disturbing reports of renewed attacks on the Abu Shok camp for internally displaced persons in El Fasher. The conflict has also spilled into Wad Medani in Gezira state, marking a new front in the nine-month-old Sudanese war.
Faki Mahamat expressed dismay over the reopening of traumatic wounds for many Darfurians who have sought refuge in Abu Shok for over two decades. Despite being a sanctuary for the displaced, the camp has witnessed a resurgence of violence in recent days. Simultaneously, Wad Medani, which has provided shelter to millions of Sudanese civilians escaping the conflict in Khartoum, is now facing its own share of attacks, compelling residents to flee once again.
In response to the dire situation, the Chairperson has fervently renewed the call for an immediate cessation of hostilities by the warring factions, namely the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. He emphasizes the need for meaningful participation in negotiations aimed at establishing and maintaining peace in Sudan.
“The Chairperson of the Commission renews the call on the belligerents, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, to immediately cease hostilities and participate meaningfully in negotiations towards building and sustaining peace in Sudan,” states the official release.
This appeal comes as a plea for compassion and resolution, recognizing the toll the conflict has taken on the lives of countless innocent civilians, particularly those who have already endured displacement and hardship in Abu Shok and Wad Medani.
Furthermore, the Chairperson reaffirms the African Union’s commitment to collaborating with key national stakeholders, as well as regional and global actors, in the pursuit of a swift and effective resolution to the Sudanese conflict. The AU stands ready to engage with entities such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, and the United Nations to collectively address the complex challenges facing Sudan.
“The Chairperson reaffirms the readiness of the AU to continue to work with key national stakeholders, regional and global actors including IGAD, League of Arab States, and the United Nations, towards the swift resolution of the conflict in Sudan,” underscores the official statement.
The renewed commitment from the African Union signals a unified effort to broker peace and stability in the region. As Sudan grapples with the ninth month of conflict, the international community’s involvement becomes increasingly vital in fostering a conducive environment for negotiations and dialogue.
In conclusion, the Chairperson’s plea serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of protracted conflicts, urging all parties involved to prioritize the well-being of the Sudanese people. The AU’s unwavering commitment to collaboration and engagement underscores the collective responsibility to bring about an end to the suffering and pave the way for a brighter and more secure future for Sudan.
