Lake Turkana Wind Power Plant has denied allegations that it is the cause of power interruptions witnessed in the past two days in the Republic of Kenya.
Through a statement, the power plant distanced itself from the blame and claims emanating from social media and the Ministry of Energy Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir.
“Lake Turkana Wind Power Plant wishes to assert that it has not caused the current power Outage as announced by Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). LTWP was forced to go offline and stop generation following an overload situation in the national grid system, which, to avoid great damage, caused the wind power plant to automatically switch off.
Since the LTWP was forced to switch off on Friday 25th , the plant has not yet been brought back into operation. During this period, there have been further interruptions and outages in the national grid system, which also remain beyond the scope of LTWP and in fact prevent us from bringing the plant back online until these issues have been resolved,” said LTWP in a statement to the media.
Businesses counted losses as the national blackout saw the country go without electricity for more than 25 hours, making a major operation stall. The JKIA operations stopped for more than 24 hours causing an uproar that saw Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen fire the managing Director and Engineering manager.
It is not now clear what might have caused the outage, but MPs have summoned the Energy Minister and his Ps to appear before the National Assembly to answer questions concerning the outage.
Despite the announcement by KPLC that operations were fully back to normal, several parts of Kenya remain in darkness
