Kenya’s second-in-command, Rigathi Gachagua has urged the government to only trim rogue religious leaders and not to interfere with entire religious institutions across the country.
Gachagua, who was speaking on Friday 12, May 2023, at Full Gospel Church at Matangi area in Juja during a requiem mass for the late John Ndung’u, said it is senseless for people to assume that all religious institutions do wrong things committed by specific individuals.
“We are saying, let it be about individuals. Those two or three people among 10,000 people hiding in the Church to do the wrong things should be isolated from the Church so that the Church can prosper.” He said.
Furthermore, DP Gachagua regarded the Shakahola incident a minute issue asking the government to only deal with spotted accused cult sects.
“The things witnessed in Kilifi are not about the Church but about individuals. The Church of Christ has many enemies because the devil is always at work day and night. They would want to use that small issue to give the Church of Christ a bad name,” added the DP.
In a statement that seem to be defending the church, Gachagua said church is more than what majority takes it to be adding that it’s a pivotal pillar in the society.
With reference to the law of the country; specifically on Article 32 of the constitution, DP Gachagua noted that religious freedom including the freedom to practice any religion or belief and as such is guaranteed in the constitution, thus the government is not on a mission to interfere with the liberty.
