Sossusvlei A Journey to The Desert

Sossusvlei, where ancient desert landscapes meet towering sand dunes. Explore the surreal beauty, enjoy thrilling safaris, and unwind in luxurious lodges. From hot-air balloon rides to stargazing, adventure awaits in this desert paradise.

Experience the Surreal Beauty of Sossusvlei
Visit Sossusvlei, one of Namibia’s most breathtaking destinations, and immerse yourself in the ancient desert landscape. The immense, rich-ochre sand dunes, rising up to a remarkable 300m, are a sight to behold. Set at the heart of the Namib Naukluft National Park, the dunes surround several dry pans or vleis that fill up on rare occasions when enough rain falls. Most of the time, however, Sossusvlei and its slightly less famous neighbour Deadvlei are bone dry.

The Sossusvlei Desert Safari Experience
A Sossusvlei safari is one of Namibia’s top travel experiences. The desert colours are simply amazing, and the opportunities for photography are plentiful, especially at dawn and sunset. You can even climb the dunes yourself – not far from the entry gate to the park is Dune 45, a much-photographed and often-climbed dune. Kick off your shoes and make your way to the top for huge views over the ocean of red Namib sand. The magnificent dunes are equally accessible to those on a Namibia self-drive holiday.

Exploring Sossusvlei
There is plenty of excellent accommodation in the area, although note that there is none at Sossusvlei itself. Self-drivers should further note that although a 2WD vehicle will take them most of the way to Sossusvlei, a 4X4 is needed to go all the way. For the final few kilometres, a 4WD shuttle is however available. Visitors can enjoy activities like game drives, interpretive nature walks, and visits to the dunes.

Staying Near Sossusvlei
Add on a hot-air balloon ride at Kulala Desert Lodge for an unforgettable experience. Many lodges are scattered on the border of the Namib Naukluft National Park, often in private conservation concessions. This means they can offer game drives, nature walks, and game drives, making your stay even more memorable. Other activities in the area include stargazing evenings and horse-back adventures, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Desert Paradise Awaits
In summary, Sossusvlei offers an unforgettable experience with its stunning sand dunes, thrilling safaris, and and much more. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, this desert paradise has something for everyone. Come and experience the magic of Sossusvlei for yourself.
