Nigeria And Morocco Clinch A Gas Pipeline Agreement

An agreement between Morocco and Nigeria to construct a sizable pipeline carrying gas from south-east Nigeria across the Sahara and through 13 African nations has been struck.

The Maghreb European Pipeline will be connected to the Brass Island-originating 7,000 km (4,300 mi) route in northern Morocco.

The project will raise living standards and lessen desertification in West Africa, according to Mele Kyari, the boss of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), who spoke at the signing ceremony in Rabat.

Algeria stopped utilizing a pipeline that passes through Morocco and on to Spain last November, depriving the Moroccans of gas as well as transit money.

The project, according to a statement from the NNPC, will also send gas to West African nations and open a new export channel to Europe.

About three billion cubic feet of gas per day are anticipated to be supplied. However, a completion date for the project is not yet known.

The agreement is being signed while the world’s energy situation continues to deepen as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Countries in Europe have been looking for methods to lessen their reliance on Russian gas.
