Floods In Nigeria Wash Hundreds Of Bodies From A Cemetery.

Floods have destroyed over 1,500 graves at a cemetery in Mariga, Niger state, in central Nigeria.

Over 500 graves have been washed away by floods in the last week alone.

Alhassan Musa Na’ibi, the town’s chief imam, told the BBC that 1,000 decomposed bodies had been reburied.

The floods occurred after days of torrential rain in the area.

According to the imam, the cemetery had never seen such devastation since it was founded 500 years ago.

The cemetery is close to a river.

Residents claim that recent gold mining near the cemetery has weakened the ground, making it vulnerable.

Nigeria is experiencing its worst flooding in a decade, affecting 29 of the country’s 36 states.

More than 300 people have been killed and over 100,000 others have been displaced since the end of July.

Bridges and vast tracts of farmland have also been destroyed.

More floods are expected in the coming weeks, according to authorities, as torrential rains continue.
