Charlene Ruto Holds Traditional Engagement with Tanzanian Entrepreneur

Kenya’s First Family marked a joyful milestone on Saturday as Charlene Ruto celebrated her traditional Koito engagement ceremony at Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County. The colourful occasion brought together dignitaries, political leaders and guests who arrived by helicopter, blending high-profile attendance with rich cultural traditions including coordinated attire, rituals, music and dances.

President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto hosted the event and warmly welcomed their daughter’s fiancé into the family. The ceremony unfolded against the scenic backdrop of the family’s farm, where guests followed a brown-and-green dress code inspired by the natural landscape. Traditional Kalenjin elements featured prominently, from cultural performances and blessings to a special cake decorated with a Sotet, the symbolic gourd representing life and nourishment.

Isaya Yunge, a 36-year-old Tanzanian tech founder and social entrepreneur recognised with the Queen’s Young Leaders Award, shared the day with Charlene. Born and raised in Mwanza, Yunge has built a reputation through ventures such as SomaApp, a platform that connects African students with scholarship opportunities. His work in technology and youth empowerment has earned him wider recognition, including from Forbes Africa. The couple appeared together in coordinated outfits, taking part in prayers, dances and family moments that underscored the personal significance of the occasion.

The ceremony highlighted family bonds as well as the growing cross-border ties between Kenya and Tanzania. Relatives from both sides gathered to formally recognise the union in the classic Kalenjin tradition of Koito, a rite that brings families together for introductions, discussions around customary arrangements, and a symbolic farewell as the bride prepares for a new chapter.

Afterwards, President Ruto shared heartfelt messages expressing pride in the couple, offering blessings for their future, and pledging the family’s continued support as they begin this new chapter together. First Lady Rachel Ruto also posted warm words of love and congratulations, drawing on scripture to bless her daughter. The day at Intonna Heritage Farm stood as both an intimate family celebration and a public affirmation of culture, love and regional connection.
