Eleven students from Kapsabet School for the Deaf were rushed to hospital after a septic tank collapsed within the school compound as they attempted to catch a glimpse of William Ruto’s motorcade passing nearby.Reports indicate that the learners had gathered at a section of the school compound when the presidential convoy approached the area.
Excited by the rare opportunity to see the Head of State, a group of students climbed onto the top of an old septic tank in order to get a better view of the passing motorcade. However, the aging structure could not withstand the weight of the learners.
The septic tank, which is estimated to be about 20 feet long, suddenly gave way and collapsed, causing the 11 students standing on it to sink into the tank. The incident triggered panic within the school as teachers, staff members, and other students rushed to the scene.
Rescue efforts were immediately launched to pull the affected learners out of the collapsed structure.Emergency responders and school authorities managed to retrieve the students before they were quickly taken to nearby health facilities for medical evaluation and treatment.
Although the exact condition of the learners was not immediately disclosed, they were reported to be receiving medical attention following the incident. The unfortunate accident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of old and poorly maintained infrastructure in some learning institutions.
Education officials and local authorities are expected to assess the situation and establish the circumstances that led to the collapse of the septic tank.Investigations are also likely to focus on whether safety measures were in place around the old structure and if it had been properly secured to prevent students from accessing it.
