Seun Kuti, Nigerian Singer, In Court After Arrest For Alleged Police Assault

The youngest son of Afribeat legend Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti has reportedly been arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer, in Nigerian.

Known for his music activism and outspoken criticism of the government, Kuti has been a vocal advocate against police brutality.

Upon having a heated quarrel with an officer along the busy Lagos road over the weekend, as displayed in a video clip that has recently gone viral over the social media, Seun Kuti eventually surrendered himself before the Nigerian court on Tuesday.

Just after the confrontation, the saxophonist took a tweet on his social media handle where he claimed for having been attempt of police brutality on him together with his family.

However, report by international media house, CNN, revealed upon contacting the Nigerian police authorities for comment, that the police wanted the singer to be locked up for a period of 21-days to give a period of Investigations.

The request, seemed unpleasant to a Lagos court who denied further detainment, as per his lawyer Femi Falana.

His Lawyer said, “The police wanted 21 days to detain him further but the court said no. The court gave them 48 hours to grant him bail if they don’t file a charge.”

Should he be found guilty of the offense, Kuti could face up to three years in prison, according to Nigerian laws.
