National Treasury To Auction Boarded Vehicles

The National Treasury of Kenya routinely disposes of unserviceable assets through public auctions as part of its end-of-year fiscal cleanup. This provides the public a rare chance to bid on government-owned motor vehicles, ICT accessories, and general office furniture.

However, if you are looking to participate in a public auction for government vehicles and electronics right now, a highly notable mass auction is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the State Department for Roads in Ruiru. This mass auction is being held by the Executive Office of the President (State House).

State House Auction Key Details Items Available: Unserviceable motor vehicles, scrap metal, old tyres, TVs, vehicle batteries, halogen security lights, a car wash machine, and assorted office and broken furniture.

Auction Date & Time: Tuesday, June 23, 2026, starting exactly at 10:00 AM.Location: State Department for Roads yard, Ruiru.Terms of Sale: All items are sold on a strict “as-is-where-is” basis.Important Policy Shift for Government VehiclesIf you are tracking long-term National Treasury auctions, note that the Treasury introduced a major policy shift.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi directed that unserviceable and grounded State vehicles should, where appropriate, be transferred directly to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to be used as practical training aids. This shift aims to boost institutional capacity and will significantly reduce the volume of state vehicles hitting public auction yards in the future.

General Requirements for Participating in State AuctionsWhile the official catalog for specific end-of-month auctions must be downloaded directly from the Government Procurement Tender Portal or specific ministry sites, state auctions typically require:Public Viewing: Bidders are allowed to inspect the condition of assets at the designated yards during working hours prior to the auction date.

Refundable Bidding Deposit: Buyers must typically pay a refundable deposit (often around Ksh 50,000 for vehicles and Ksh 10,000–Ksh 30,000 for office stores) to get a bidding number.Immediate Payment: Successful bidders are required to pay a downpayment (usually 25% or full payment depending on the conditions) on the auction day via electronic transfer or banker’s cheque.
