Traders under the Bars, Hotels and Liquor Traders Association of Kenya (BAHLITA) are calling on the Senate to stop further debate on the proposed tobacco bill to allow for wider consultations.
The association says there has been strong opposition from traders across the country, who want some sections of the bill reviewed before it proceeds.
BAHLITA Secretary General Boniface Gachoka argues that the Senate did not conduct enough public participation on the proposed law, leading to backlash from business owners.
He has also raised concern over a proposal to ban flavours in nicotine products. According to him, such a move could increase illegal trade, as consumers may turn to unregulated alternatives. The association is now urging senators to pause the process and create room for dialogue to address the concerns raised by traders over certain provisions in the bill.
