Legacy Remembered: President Ruto Conveys Condolences for Mwinyi

President William Ruto of Kenya has extended his heartfelt condolences to President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania and the entire Tanzanian populace following the demise of former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi.

Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who served as the second President of the United Republic of Tanzania from 1985 to 1995, passed away on Thursday. President Ruto, in his message, eulogized Mwinyi as a towering figure in leadership, adorned with a rich and enduring legacy.

“I extend my condolences and those of the people of Kenya to President Samia Suluhu and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania following the passing on of Ali Hassan Mwinyi, the second President of the United Republic of Tanzania. We join in mourning the loss of a great leader whose rich legacy will never fade. Rest In Peace, Mzee Mwinyi,” mourned President Ruto.

President Suluhu announced Mwinyi’s demise, revealing that he passed away at a hospital in Dar es Salaam where he had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer. The late leader had been under medical care since November.

“On behalf of the government, I would like to convey my condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and all Tanzanians for this loss,” President Suluhu expressed.

Furthermore, President Suluhu disclosed that Mwinyi’s final resting place will be in Ugunja, nestled in the highlands of Zanzibar, with the burial scheduled for March 2, 2024. She also declared a week-long period of mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-mast across the country.

Ali Hassan Mwinyi assumed office following the footsteps of Tanzania’s founding president, Julius Nyerere. Prior to his presidency, Mwinyi held various governmental roles, including serving as the Interior Minister and Vice President. He also chaired the ruling party, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), from 1990 to 1996.

In his retirement years, Mwinyi chose a life away from the public eye, residing in Dar es Salaam. Notably, his son, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, currently holds the position of President of Zanzibar, the Tanzanian archipelago.
